Dachshunds are short-legged, elongated breed of dog from the hound dog family. The standard dachshund was bred to scent, chase and flush badgers along with other burrow dwelling animals while the miniature dachshund breed was created to hunt much smaller prey such as rabbits. In some places, dachshunds have been trained to hunt prairie dogs. Because of the dachshunds long and narrow build, they are referred to as hot dog, weiner dog or sausage dog.
The dachshunds compact body and confidence allows them to be fierce and agile in the confines of the badger's den. Dachshunds like to hunt and dig as well as track a scent to where ever it will take them. Dachshunds have a very bold personaility and fears very little thus making them the perfect "watch dog". Despite this adventurous nature, they make the best pet in the world due to their unconditional loyalty and love of children. Most dachshunds are so loyal to their owners that they may be wary of strangers. Dachshunds are independent but will transition into a family when given the chance. Being full of energy, they just love to play at every chance. When its time to relax, they just sit in your lap and cuddle. When its time to sleep, they will burrow under the covers for security. Their excercise requirements can be accomplished with moderate walks. Even though a dachshund is a hunter at heart, they very easily can adjust to city live or apartment living.
