Dachshund Breed

The AKC Dachshund is a breed of hound dog that originates from Germany who's personality is lively and friendly with a very keen sense of smell.  Referred to as hot dog, wiener dog or sausage dog, dachsunds are known for their long and low body,  Dachshunds are eager hunters that excel in above ground and below ground work.  Dachshunds are one of the worlds most popular breed according to the AKC registration statistics and are bred in three different but unique varieties such as smooth dachshund, wirehaired dachshund and longhaired dachshund with each available in a miniature or standard size.

Dachshund History

As early as the 1600's, Dachshunds were bred in Germany with the goal to creating a fearless, elongated dog that could burrow and dig and fight to the death into a badgers home.  The dachshund breed was migrated and became very popular in the United States during the early 1900,s but declined during World War 1.  However, after the war U.S. dachshund breeders slowly rebuilt the gene pool by importing pure bloodline dachshunds from Germany, thus become increasingly popular once again.
