Dachshund First Aid Kit

Dachshund First Aid

When it comes to dachshund first aid care , it is important to know in the event your dachshund should ever need emergency attention for any situation.  If you know dachshund first aid, you will fee more confident in diagnosing emergency situations and in turn can comfort or calm your dachshund.  The most important thing to remember is you need to stabilize your dachshund until professional care is available.  Dachshund first aid should not be the only care that your dachshund is exposed too.

Have a dachshund first aid kit standing by to assist you in dealing with mild injuries.  Every dachshund first aid kit should contain the following items:

  • Rectal thermometer for taking temperature
  • Antibiotic ointment for cuts and scrapes
  • Tweezers to remove splinters or stingers
  • Bandages and padding for wounds
  • Large blanket or towel for wrapping your dog

Standard Injuries - If you dachshund injures to breaks his leg, you run the risk of shock so wrap him in a heavy blanket to keep him warm and restrict movement.  Take hime to the vet right away.

Not Breathing - If you dachshund stops breathing for any reason, administer CPR if you have been trained to perform this task.  If you are not trained, rush your dachshund to the vet immediately.  If you are trained to perform CPR on your dachshund, administer it while you are on the way to the hospital.

Bleeding - If your dachshund starts to bleed, perform the correct dachshund care by applying a thick, sterile bandage to the affected area and put a firm pressure to the wound to stop the bleeding.  If you bleeding does not stop after about 5 minutes, take your dachshund to the vet as he may require stiches.

Burn - If you dachshund suffers from a burn, apply a cold compress or ice pack to the affected area and go to your vet.  Note that you should have your ice or cold compress wrapped in a towel before being applies to the burn.  Never apply ice directly on a burn as this will cause the burn to worsen.

Poison - If your dachshund ingests poison of any kind, the propfer dachshund care is to call the vet and poison control to see if vomiting should be induced.  Regardless of the recommendation, get your dachshund to the vet to have him checked out.

Chocking - If your dachshund appears to be chocking (trouble swallowing, gagging) do not remove the object and get him to the pet hospital.  If your dachshund is coughing and having trouble swallowing, he most likely can breathe.   If you can, encourge your dachshund to bark to try to assist him in coughing up whatever is lodged in his throat.  Take him to the vet.

Fever - Your dachshunds fever should never exceed 103 degrees.  If it reaches and exceed this, rush him to the vet or pet hospital for immediate attention.

Heatstroke - If you dachshund is showing signs of heatstroke, go straight to a shaded or cool location and sponge him with cool water.  Encourage him to drink small amounts of water and get him to the pet hospital.

Frostbile - If you dachshund has frostbite you will need to warm him up if you can.  Wrap moist, warm towels or blankets around the areas that is frostbitten.  Continue this procedure until you see the area get flush (turn bright pink or red).  Take him to the pet hospital.

Finally, if your dachshund should ever become injured and need emergency care, be sure to rush him to the vet as soon as possible.  It is a smart idea to keep a list of emergency numbers such as your vet, emergency pet clinic and posion control by your phone so you do not have to search for them in a crisis.
