Dachshund Senses

Dachshund Senses

Being in the hound dog class, dachshunds have very well developed senses to accomomdate their unique lifestyles.  Dachshund senses include sight, hearing, touch, smell and taste. Below is a listing of each of the dachshund senses and how it relates to the breed.

Dachshund Sight
- A dachshund can see and detect movement at a significantly greater distance than humans.  Although they can not see well up close, they can see better in low lighting but have problems with colors.

Dachshund Hearing - A dachshund can hear at least 4 times better than humans.  They are also sensitive to music and high pitch sounds.

Dachshund Smell - A dachshund can track a smell that is weeks old and is by far their most sensitive organ available.  You need to watch a dachshund that is unleash because it will track a scent to far distances and can get lost.

Dachshund Touch - Dachshunds are very social animals therefore need a lot of touching, petting and grooming.  Give them lots of attention and they will give it back to you a million times over.

Dachshund Taste - Dachshunds do not have great taste buds so they will eat just about anything.  Dachshunds just love to eat so watch what you give them.
